Innovation is at the core of our business. Playing with new technology and putting new ideas to work is our passion. We invest a lot of time and resources exploring new paths and developing groundbreaking technology that later materializes as cutting-edge features in our products.
Research projects
playence is participating in and collaborating with research projects in order to drive the innovation of our products. Here is an overview of our current research activities.

Cloud-Arm The Cloud-Arm project aims at developing a tool for mobile devices that will create and automatically display layers of augmented reality, without having to rely on suppliers of mobile devices. The resulting system, running through the browser and supporting HTML5, will be completely independent of the operating system, thereby meeting the needs of all users regardless of their mobile device, profile or context. Within the scope of the project data layers that overlap with the reality will be generated automatically based on a number of semantic datasets, which will be developed as part of the project. At the same time, and through the use of image retrieval technology, the project will contribute to improving indoor and outdoor geo-localization systems used by the augmented reality service. The project envisages the creation of a community of users to generate and improve web content, enabling the widespread adoption of the generated data by third parties profiting from the Linked Data publishing paradigm.
Cloud-Arm is a collaborative project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the Innpacto programme.
Cloud-Arm website will be available soon.

Cloud Destination The Cloud Destination project focuses on providing businesses active in the tourist field solutions for managing the tourist life cycle (before, during and after the travel) promoting by these means more intelligent destinations. The goal of the project is to deliver solutions both for companies and tourists alike. On the one hand, the integration of tools and services in the Cloud will enable companies to obtain complete and detailed information about the profile of the tourist. This will result in the ability to better manage their activity, improving the targeting of services and products. On the other hand, tourist will benefit from a set of integrated and novel services (e.g. augmented reality, ubiquitous contents, etc.), that will result in a richer and more satisfactory holidays experience.
Cloud Destination is a collaborative project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the Innpacto programme.

TOSCA-MP TOSCA-MP aims to develop user-centric content annotation and search tools for professionals in networked media production and archiving (television, radio, online), addressing their specific use cases and workflow requirements. This will be achieved by scalable and distributed content processing methods performing advanced multimodal information extraction and semantic enrichment. Other key technology areas will include search methods across heterogeneous networked content repositories and novel user interfaces.
TOSCA-MP is a FP 7 collaborative project co-funded through the grant number FP7-287532 under EU Objective 1.5.

MASHLINK The objective of the MASHLINK project is to enhance multimedia annotation and consequently media asset management by using the vast amount of information available through the Linked Open Data cloud1 and to enable smooth data integration among all types of resources, such as text and multimedia, by applying Linked Data principles to information systems within organizations.
This project is funded by the FFG through the Basis program.

MOUVIZ The MOUVIZ project aims at developing efficient means for the management of multimedia content and the provision of retrieval functionality through mobile devices. Together with our partners Spectralmind and M-Pulso, we are working on advanced and integrated multimedia search over interlinked networks of information, novel visualization methods for usable and comprehensive search, and the provision of these technologies through mobile devices.
This project is funded by the COIN programme of the FFG.

CrystalShoot The CrystalShoot project aims at developing the methods and techniques that help, through the use of a multiplayer casual game interface, gather reliable semantically enhanced descriptions of videos for later reuse. The prototype should also serve to asses whether the proposed technique is able to generate a critical mass of annotations.
This project is funded by the AWS through the Impulse line.

Research topics

Here is a very brief overview of research areas we are interested in and technologies we are playing with to build innovative and groundbreaking products for you.
Semantic search The "killer app" of semantic technology and information management in general is still intelligent search that understands the users’ query and context. Semantic search is therefore one of our core interests. We are working in combining faceted search and filtering for unstructured sources with probabilistic, linguistic, and semantic query expansion.
Semantic navigation and visualization of knowledge Exploiting ontologies for the navigation of networks of information has the potential to fundamentally improving efficiency and the user experience. Similarly, there are completely novel and innovative ways of visualizing knowledge.
Semantic annotation of text and multimedia The enrichment of data with semantic descriptions is another core objective of playence. We are exploring with automatic and semi-automatic methods for the annotation of text, video, audio, and images. We apply video analysis, speech extraction, game-based methods and many more to find innovation solutions for the knowledge acquisition bottleneck.
Linked Open Data The Linked Open Data movement has gained a lot of momentum recently aiming at publishing datasets using RDF. We are looking into exploiting these vast amounts of linked data to enrich content and improve search.
