"The next generation Web should not be based on the false assumption that text is predominant [...] The Web is a multimedia environment, which makes for complex semantics." Tim Berners-Lee et al. "A Framework for Web Science" in: Foundations and Trends in Web Science, Vol. 1, No 1, 2006, pp. 1-130.

Innovation is at the core of our daily business. Playing with new technology and putting new ideas to work is our passion. We invest a lot of time and resources exploring new paths and developing ground breaking technology later materializing as features in our products.

This technology forecast by Pricewaterhouse Coopers provides an overview of technologies we are working with.

Research projects

playence is participating in and collaborating with research projects in order to drive the innovation of our products. Here is an overview of our current research activities.

playence crowd playence crowd

The crowd sourcing solution is designed for large amounts of user-generated multimedia. playence uses its technology combined with human computation via casual, social games to create video descriptions. This enables search and contextual video advertising.

This project is partially funded by the AWS Creative Industries funding line.

mouvizMOUVIZ

The MOUVIZ project aims at developing efficient means for the management of multimedia content and the provision of retrieval functionality through mobile devices understanding the completely new characteristics of mobile devices (bandwidth, limited screen size etc.) and the importance of usability and visualization. Together with our partners Spectralmind and M-Pulso, we are working on advanced and integrated multimedia search over interlinked networks of information, novel visualization methods for usable and comprehensive search, and the provision of these technologies through mobile devices.

This project is funded by the COIN programme of the FFG

insemtivesINSEMTIVES

The objective of this EU-funded research project is to bridge the gap between human and computational intelligence in the current semantic content authoring R&D landscape. The project aims enabling the massive creation of semantic content. playence collaborates with INSEMTIVES on the topic of incentives as well as games for semantic content creation. Our CTO Ozelin Lopez also serves as User Advisory Board member of the project.

Research topics

Here is a very brief overview of research areas we are interested in and technologies we are playing with to build innovative and ground-breaking products for you.

Semantic search

The "killer app" of semantic technology and knowledge management in general is still intelligent search that understands the users query and the information. Semantic search is therefore one of our core interests. We are working with faceted search and filtering for unstructured sources; probabilistic, linguistic, and semantic query expansion; collaborative and social search and many more.

Semantic navigation and visualization of knowledge

Exploiting ontologies for the navigation of networks of information has the potential to fundamentally improve efficiency and user experience. Similarly there are completely novel and innovative ways of visualizing knowledge.

Semantic annotation of text and multimedia

The enrichment of data with semantic descriptions is another core objective of playence. We are playing with automatic and semi-automatic methods for the annotation of text, video, audio, and images. We apply video analysis, speech extraction, game-based methods and many more to find innovation solutions for the knowledge acquisition bottleneck.

Linked Open Data

The Linked Open Data movement has gained a lot of momentum recently aiming at publishing datasets using RDF. We are looking into exploiting this vast amounts of linked data to enrich content and improve search.
